God I Love The Midnight . . . from the time I discovered them seven years ago, hearing “Sunset”, someone had set the song to clips of an 80s movie starring Jennifer Conelly and some guy who were playing around in a store after it had closed, roller blading all over the place. Synthwave is such a sweet sound to me, a bite of synthetic panacea to cure a yearning for a time I never knew— it’s mint in a cup of ice water, a swirl of strawberry in vanilla soft serve, a long sunset drive that goes on hours longer than a sunset logically should . . .
September 1st is, near universally, a day that represents fresh starts. I mean, it’s an indoctrinated thing, but. Considering all the other indoctrinations, this one is relatively harmless. Just makes you feel fresh and peppy and eager to start something new. You Know? But it’s also an ending. An ending to summer vacation. An end to the hottest month of the year. For some the start of a whole new season!
“It is mighty cold comfort to do things if nobody cares whether you succeed or not.”
A new chance.
“It can’t rain all the time.”
A new death.
“Stay gold, Ponyboy.”
A new life.
Being 100% honest here, I’m one of those “September 1st is the first day of Halloween!” people, which I’m not even going to let anyone rag about me for when apparently some of you Godless sodomites start buying up Halloween everything in AUGUST. AUGUST?! Disgusting. Anyway, I’ve got some things I love to do when the Summer is starting to fade away . . .
Watching dark/horror movies like:
Enjoying botanical gardens again now that it’s not hot as the Devil’s armpit
Furiously scrambling to try and accomplish something of not for the year.
The Crow, Donnie, Darko, Hell House LLC., The Mummy (1999), etc.
Spiraling with each lost hour of daylight
Choosing the last books of the year to read.
Other Media that Represent Both the Pain and Relief of a New Beginning, Like The First of September
SSS-Class Revival Hunter
Oz
The Yearling
Suspiria
Use those empty notebooks! get started on your September read! Take a sunset swim before the sun sets at five! Get more into your local library, I don’t know just! Do something new today!
